Alcohol inks, highly pigmented and quick drying, differ from other fluid mediums because they flow, intermingle and create distinctive textures, often with unexpected results. One of the benefits of painting with alcohol inks is the opportunity to begin with an abstract composition and then, as the alcohol evaporates and the ink pools, to see the possibility of adding realistic elements.
Students will explore the unique qualities of alcohol ink and how it can be used for flowing abstracted works or representational images. This workshop is designed those who have had little or no experience using this medium and encourages experimentation with a sense of creative playfulness. Class time will be divided between instruction and demonstrations with students creating many explorative paintings using this exciting and unpredictable medium. The workshop will end with a critique allowing participants to share their paintings and to discuss what they have discovered.
All materials are provided. Students should bring a shirt or apron and a lunch or snack. We will take a half-hour break.
