Watercolor Studio
with Anne P. Wert (W25)

This class is full.

In this class, we will explore what makes watercolor unique. Some previous watercolor or other painting experience is preferred. We will explore this fun but challenging medium through simple lessons and/or demos. Students are encouraged to apply these techniques to images of their choosing. Instructor Anne P. Wert will work with students individually to determine the strongest composition and how to best use watercolor to create a successful painting.

Each class ends with the opportunity to learn from your fellow painters in our weekly group critique.

Thursdays, 8 weeks, January 09 – February 27, 2025

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Students must bring from home or purchase these materials for the class: Watercolor materials (brushes, paints, paper). Any brand of watercolor paints is acceptable, but Anne uses Winsor Newton. Cotman is a less expensive brand. A detailed list of all supplies will be sent to students prior to class.

Rough, and 140 lb or 300 lb (NOT Hot Press and NOT 90 lb). Wert uses Arches rough 300 lb, which she buys in large sheets and rips to size, but it is very expensive. Students can also buy blocks of paper which is convenient, 9”x12” or 10”x14” is recommended.

Watercolor Brushes: Any brand is fine, just make sure they are watercolor brushes. Various sizes of round brushes are recommended.

Also: a rigger*, and wash* or mop* watercolor brush.

Watercolor Palette: Any watercolor palette is fine. Either a travel palette or a full-size option. You can even use a plain white porcelain platter.

Watercolor Paints: Any brand is acceptable, per instructor Anne Wert, but she prefers Winsor Newton. They make a less expensive Cotman set, which is suitable for beginners. Wert suggests buying tubes of paint rather than pans or half pans. Suggested colors: Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine Blue, Antwerp Blue or Prussian Blue, Winsor Yellow or Cadmium Yellow, Raw Sienna, Brown Madder and/or Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Rose Madder or Alizarin Crimson, White Gouache* (nice to have for finishing touches, but not necessary right away), Dioxazine Purple*, Winsor Red or Cadmium Red*, Cobalt Turquoise*, Perylene Green.* If you already have watercolors, you don’t need to buy all new tubes. Just make sure you have a variety of warm and cool blues, yellows, and reds, as well as some neutral browns.

Watercolor Paper: If you are going to splurge on anything, instructor Anne Wert thinks paper is the most important. Any brand is okay, but paper should be Cold Press or

Other: Sketchbook (watercolor paper is nice, but not necessary)

Small spray bottle; paper towels or tissues; a container for water (teacher uses an old yogurt container); white artist tape (only necessary to tape paper to board if not using a block)
