Linoleum Block Printing
with Kathrine Lovell (W25)

This class is now full.

In this class, students will explore the art of relief printing using linoleum blocks as their medium. Linoleum block printing is a traditional printmaking technique in which designs are carved into the surface of a linoleum block and the remaining raised areas are inked and pressed onto paper or fabric to create bold, striking images. This technique has been used over the years by textile designers and fine artists. It is a great way to create fabrics, greeting cards, labels and artist’s prints.

Students will learn how to use carving tools, and create detailed designs with a focus on creativity and precision. We will cover methods for applying ink and printing by hand or with the use of a small press. We will be using paper only in class, but we will discuss how to adapt techniques for use with cloth.

This course will also introduce the advanced technique of reduction printing. This is a layered method to create multi-colored images all on one block. We will be learning about layering color, color theory and registration (alignment). Reduction printing requires careful planning and accuracy because the process cannot be reversed.
