Members have the opportunity to view the Katazome stencil collection belonging to the Handicraft Club, and hear about the use of these stencils, including a demonstration of their use by Cathy Wilkerson. Cathy is an engaging speaker and an enthusiastic teacher, and has offered workshops in indigo dying and block printing to our members.
Cathy Wilkerson, also known as the Indigo Squirrel, has recently traveled to Japan, where she printed with antique stencils and visited the epicenter of where these stencils were created. This summer, Cathy borrowed from our collection as she attended a retreat spent printing with a group of fellow artists. The group used these in historically accurate methods of printing, utilizing two kinds of flour to make the traditional rice paste for printing. The technique also employed traditional tools and fabrics, and dying with indigo.
