Beginning Nantucket Baskets
with Michael A. Steller (W26)

This introductory course is designed for individuals interested in learning how to create a traditional Nantucket lightship basket. Students will make a wine cooler basket as their first project — an ideal introduction since everyone will work on an identical mold. Those wishing to explore other basket types are also welcome.

Over the course of five weeks, participants will learn essential skills in shaping staves, weaving cane and finishing their baskets with shellac and polyurethane. This class is geared toward beginners. Please note that the cost of materials reflects the use of high-quality hardwood staves, where the base and rim are closely matched in thickness to the staves for a fine, professional finish.
